A Winter Storm Clock was released for all of southeastern Wisconsin from Thursday, December 22, 6 a.m. to Saturday, December 24, 6 a.m. A region-wide blizzard remains likely.

Forecast Breakdown

Time window: Light scattered snow from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. Snow really picks up Thursday afternoon and evening. Heaviest snowfall expected Thursday night through Friday morning. Winds will pick up Thursday afternoon and get really strong Thursday after 6pm with NW gusts of 30-60mph. Blizzard conditions possible intermittently Thursday night through Friday. It doesn’t look like there will be any snow on Friday, but blowing and blowing will continue on Friday and Saturday.

Amounts: The snow totals are down, but this does not change the Blizzard potential. 4-8″ snow possible over much of southeast Wisconsin. Friday’s heavier snow has moved east. This lowers the totals, however a change in storm track could sustain snow in SE WI on Friday. As of this post, the heaviest snow falls about 50 miles east over the lake on Friday Total snowfall could increase as the low moves west Stay tuned for updates.

Snow forecast now 4-8″. Blizzard conditions are still expected Thursday night/Friday morning

Effects: The journey will be difficult from Thursday night to Friday. The strong winds will continue on Saturday with blowing snow. Friday will bring bitterly cold air with wind showers up to -25 Friday night, Saturday and Sunday morning.

snow type: This snow might start out as the wetter variety on Thursday but quickly become fluffy late Thursday evening through Friday.

Thursday 5 p.m. forecast. The wind will be stronger with moderate snowfall.

Friday 9am forecast. Snow tapers with very strong wind.

Friday 2 p.m. forecast. Heaviest snow in the east. Light snowfall and strong winds in SE WI.

A blizzard is defined as heavy snowfall with wind gusts of 35 mph or greater and reduced visibility to 0.25 miles. or less for three hours or more. The last blizzard warning in SE WI (Walworth, Racine & Kenosha Co.) was in 2018. The last blizzard warning for Milwaukee County was in 2011.

The wind will really pick up Thursday night through Friday creating these blizzard conditions. Expect significant travel delays by both air and road on Thursday evening and Friday. If you are planning to travel by plane, check with your airline. It’s possible to see power outages and freeway closures Thursday evening and Friday in parts of the upper Midwest.
