Aside from these things to do in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hokkaido, one of the best things to do in Japan is to see the scenic fall foliage.

Japan’s fall foliage season begins around mid-September, beginning with the northernmost island of Hokkaido. For the main island honshu, where the capital city of Tokyo is located, is between mid-October and early December for the best fall foliage viewing time. As such, November is probably the best month to visit any part of Japan if you want to admire the vibrant fall colors.

Here are some of the best places to see the fall foliage in Japan and family-friendly hotels where you can stay comfortably and accessible. Since Hokkaido is the first to welcome autumn to the country, let’s start with Hokkaido and move south to other regions popular with tourists.

Several regions are great for staying in Tokyo such as Shinjuku Station which is near Meiji Shrine and other tourist areas like being near Shibuya Station and Ikebukuro Station.

However, my favorite hotel is in Shiodome — The Royal Park Hotel Tokyo Shiodome. It is close to the shopping street in Ginza and easily accessible from the artificial island of Odaiba. The best reason to stay there is that you can see the Tokyo Tower from your window if you book the attraction view room.

The city of Osaka is so conveniently located that you can set your base here while exploring neighboring cities like Kyoto and Nara. The best places to stay are none other than the shopping areas near Umeda Station (it’s also a convenient place to go to Kyoto and Nara) and Shinsaibashi Station.

My favorite hotel, which often sells out in high season, is Cross Hotel Osaka. Its prime location in Dotonbori, where the Glico man sign is located, makes it very attractive. Imagine carrying bags with your shopping swag and being able to simply return to the hotel to unload and continue your shopping spree. What a luxury!

Family-friendly hotels to consider:

Hotel Nikko Osaka

Hilton Osaka hotel

Hotel Hankyu Respire Osaka
