The New York Giants had a dream season for the first 10 weeks of the year, but they were given a harsh reality check in Sunday’s surprise loss to the Detroit Lions.
The big troubles that led to the Giants’ struggles in 2021 finally reared their ugly heads in 2022 for the first time. A big reason the Giants went 4-13 last season is because their running game wasn’t there and because Daniel Jones was a turnover machine, and those were both issues during the 31-18 loss in New York.
Jones went eight weeks without an interception, but that streak finally ended on Sunday when he was picked up by Aidan Hutchinson in the second quarter.
That was one of two interceptions Jones would throw against the Lions. The Giants QB also threw a pick in the third quarter when a comeback was still a possibility.
When the Hutchinson selection occurred, the Giants led 6-3, but that lead melted away three games later when the Lions scored a touchdown to go up 10-6. After that, Detroit would never lag behind.
Saquon Barkley and the Giants’ running game were incredibly successful this year, so New York didn’t really have to rely on Jones, but Barkley was stopped cold almost every game — his longest streak was four yards — the Giants were forced to look to Jones to tack (Barkley only had 22 yards on 15 carries against the Lions).
Though Jones’ numbers weren’t bad — he finished 27 of 44 for 341 yards and a TD — most of his fourth-quarter production went into garbage time. The Giants haven’t had to fear any major comebacks this year, but after falling 24-6 behind in that game, it’s worth asking if this offense has the ability to play from behind.
The Giants struggled with a lot of issues on Sunday — they were hit hard by injuries, their running game was halted and they imposed some early penalties — so that loss wasn’t just down to Jones, but given the fact that the Giants went up against one With the worst defenses in the NFL, you have to expect more from Jones and the offense overall.
