Promotion scenarios have fallen short for the United States, as they only need to win against Iran to have five points and a goal difference of at least +1. Wales need a surprise win over group favorites England to move up to four points in hopes of improving their goal difference, currently at -2, compared to the Three Lions, who are currently +4. As a reminder, a draw or defeat for USA is not an option if they want to progress. It’s up for grabs and you’re in mode.
How the United States Can Advance: Simple Permutations
- With a win against Iran: The United States qualified for the round of 16 with a win for the third time in the last four World Cups. It’s that simple. An England win over Wales would put the Three Lions in first place by seven points, with the United States trailing by five points. Wales would need to win by a wide margin – by at least three goals – to overcome the goal difference compared to the United States.
- With a win against Iran AND England’s loss/draw against Wales: The United States has a few ways to win the group. A United States win in England’s loss to Wales would suffice by just five points. If England draws, the United States would have to beat Iran by more than four goals to equal England’s superior goal difference.
