Is the PSVR 2 backward compatible

When PSVR 2 was announced all these months ago, the VR community was thrown into a flurry of speculation, with PSVR 2 backwards compatibility being one of the top questions.

In the months since the announcement, we’ve gained clarity on many of the previously unknown aspects of PSVR, we know the price, release date, and pre-order information. We even managed to learn a lot about the PSVR 2 controllers.

So let’s talk about the lack of backwards compatibility for PSVR 2 and why we don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Will the PSVR 2 be backward compatible?

Short answer: no. The long answer is a bit more complicated and requires some explanations, so let’s look at Wawan.

The official announcement regarding PSVR 2 backwards compatibility was made on 09/16 on Episode 439 of the Official PlayStation Podcast by Platform Experience Senior Vice President Hideaki Nishino.

In an unsurprisingly media-trained statement, Nishino explains that “PSVR2 is designed to deliver a next-gen VR experience.”

This therefore disqualifies it from backwards compatibility, we don’t have a super concrete specific answer, but it probably has something to do with inherent ghardware differences between PSVR and PSVR 2.

If this sounds like a familiar story, you’re right, Sony has had its fair share of ups and downs when it comes to backwards compatibility. The original PS3 console could play PS2 games as it literally contained the guts of a PS2 that was phased out in later revisions.

Then the PS4 was never backwards compatible with PS3 games because Sony made the wise decision to move away from Cell Architecture.

We think PSVR 2 lacks backwards compatibility because it’s too different from the original PSVR, unfortunately we’re not privy to Sony’s design docs so we can’t say for sure, but it’s a fair bet nonetheless.

Will PSVR 2 work on PS4?

Aside from issues with internal hardware incompatibilities, there is the issue of raw performance. Both the original PSVR and PSVR 2 aren’t standalone headsets, meaning they require a PS4 or PS5 respectively to power them.

Even if the PSVR 2 did work with the PS4, it wouldn’t perform nearly as well as it did with the PS5, as the PS5 almost can 8 times stronger than the PS4.
