The launch of God of War Ragnarok was bigger than Call of Duty, Elden Ring and Pokémon | UK boxed chart

God of War Ragnarok is the second biggest boxing game of the year in the UK after FIFA 23.

That means the PlayStation game sold more box copies in its first week than Elden Ring, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and previous runner-up Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

These are physical box sales only, and given that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was a significant download title, it’s entirely possible that God of War wasn’t quite #2 overall (we’ll get the download dates later in the week ). Still, it’s a massive opening week for the Sony title. 82% of week one box sales were on PS5, 18% on PS4.

As chart company GfK revealed last week, Ragnarok sold more in its first day than any other game in the series that sold in its first week. According to the data company, the game sold 51% more units in its first week than the previous bestseller, 2018’s God of War. In just one week, the game is already the third best-selling God of War title of all time (and in In terms of revenue, it is already No. 2).

12% of God of War Ragnarok PS5 sales come from the official PS5 bundle. This bundle represented 60% of all PS5 console sales this week, which is officially the highest-selling week for PS5 this year, says GfK boss Dorian Bloch.

This ends Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s two-week stint at the top of the charts. The Activision Blizzard title falls to No. 2 after a slight 39% week-over-week sales dip.

The next biggest new game this month is Sonic Frontiers at number 4. The Sega game sold 5% more copies in its first week than 2017’s Sonic Forces, although Digital is likely to add to that a bit. PS5 accounted for 40% of box sales, Nintendo Switch 34%, Xbox 14% and PS4 12%.

Next up is Football Manager 2023 in 11th place, with boxed launch sales down 18% from last year’s title (as the PC version, most of the game’s sales will be digital).

The PS4 version of Stray launched physically, causing the game to return to the chart at #23, while Tactics Ogre: Reborn debuted at #24 and Cobrai Kai 2: Dojo’s Rising debuted at #28.

Elsewhere, the surge in PS5 sales means Sony’s other big game of the year – Horizon: Forbidden West – jumps to number 7 after sales surged 141% week-on-week. We also saw an increase in Switch game sales with Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (#5) up 34%, Nintendo Switch Sports (#6) up 19%, Splatoon 3 (#8) up 22% , Animal Crossing: New Horizons (#9) by 50% and Minecraft on Switch by 42%.
