One of the balances I’m trying to strike in 2023 is using technology more efficiently. I’d like to know what’s happening in the world in terms of news, sports and finance, but I don’t want to look at an iPhone as much. I want technology that works passively, and that’s one of the reasons I’m excited to have Tidbyt on my desk in the new year.
Tidbyt is a retro-style display that lets you stay connected to the things that matter to you in short snippets of text. You can add financial offers, your calendar, what’s on Spotify, sports scores, the latest news and more. I first heard about it last year and am excited for it to be a regular part of my lifestyle in 2023.
Why Tidbyt is the ideal accessory for working from home
Tidbyt is a retro-style display that helps you keep up with the things that matter to you. It shows brief updates from feeds you follow, in the format of a telegram or a retro. It’s both a tribute to early computing and an experiment in using that technology to help people focus on what matters most. As someone who works from home, I think it’s the ideal accessory to keep up with the world around me without staring at a device all day.
The original idea for Tidbyt was to create a device that would simplify your morning routine. What time is it? What’s the weather like? When is the next subway? Having to repeatedly reach for an iPhone to answer these questions was tedious and distracting. So the team wanted to create something that would streamline access to information without distracting you.
The video is very well done and really highlights some of the advantages of Tidbyt. All the information in the world is available to you while you’re sitting at your desk or watching TV, without having to stare at your iPhone.
I’ve had it on my desk for a few weeks and it’s become one of my favorite tech products that I’ve used in a long time. It works at a glance, keeps me informed and not meant to distract me.
Set up Tidbyte
Setting up your Tidbyt takes about five minutes and is a similar process to setting up a new HomeKit device. You plug it in with the included USB-C card and adapter, open the Tidbyt app, and then find it via Bluetooth. You’ll go through the process of creating an account and then you can start choosing your “apps”.
What information can Tidbyt display?
Tidbyt has a plethora of pre-built apps that are ready to view. Some of my favorites are:
- bitcoin price
- When is Georgia going to play football next?
- How is the weather outside?
- Current date/time
- Bible verse of the day
- Sunrise sunset
- Google calendar
- Twitter feed
These are just a few of the apps I use with Tidbyt, but there are countless more. Some popular ones are:
- Google calendar
- Subway timetable
- Costco gas prices
- NFL Results
- MLB Results
- Twitter feed
- Random Advice
Check out the entire list to see the possibilities. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can also use Tidbyt’s API to create your own. You could create a custom app for a feed in your office that includes detailed project statistics, sales numbers, or really anything you can think of.
Tidbyt has all the information you want and need in one place, displayed in a wooden case with a matrix of bright LED lights. You can choose from a catalog of pre-built apps like weather, stocks, subway times, bitcoin price, calendar and more, or create your own script on the open platform with just a few lines of code. You set it up once with your phone and it stays up to date over its own Wi-Fi connection.
Tidbyt is an easy way to stay connected without the distractions of social media apps. You can use it to see what’s happening in your world and keep up with the things that matter to you. If you’re looking for a gift for someone who loves technology but needs to use it a little less – Tidbyt would make the perfect Christmas present. It’s the perfect way to get the latest information without having to keep looking at a smartphone. It would look great in a living room, bedroom (including night mode), kitchen or office. There’s no subscription to access all of the data, it costs a one-time fee of $179, and can be purchased directly from Tidbyt.com.
