65″ TCL 6 Series 4K Mini LED QLED TV for $599.99

HDMI 2.1 for 4K at 120Hz

The reason the TCL R646 is significantly cheaper compared to other TVs with similar specs is because it’s a 2021 model. There is a 2022 variant (the R655) but it is very hard to find and much more expensive. The TCL R646 features a Mini LED Quantum Dot Panel (QLED). with full array LED backlighting and local dimming with 240 zones and a wide color gamut. That makes it an excellent HDR TV, especially as it supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.

What’s good about “Mini LED”, “QLED” and “Local Dimming”?

The QLED panel allows this TV to maintain strong color accuracy and good dynamic range even at the highest brightness levels. The local dimming function allows different zones to be dimmed or brightened independently, allowing the TV to deftly deal with scenes where the brightest whites and darkest blacks occur at the same time. Mini LED panels allow for even more precise local dimming as the controller zones are smaller and more numerous. While a regular LCD TV with local dimming can have up to 100 dimming zones, the TCL R66 has a whopping 240 zones.

Why is this a good gaming TV?

The TCL R646 has gamers covered. It features a native 120Hz panel and two HDMI 2.1 inputs. That means it can pass true 4K at 120Hz on PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles and RTX 30-series equipped gaming PCs. The TCL R646 also supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), this TV’s version of Adaptive Sync technology, as well as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), where the TV automatically switches to a lower latency when it detects a game.

What intelligent interface does it use?

The 2021 TCL 6 series is also new enough to adopt Google TV for its smart TV experience. A definite upgrade from the aging Android TV interface, Google TV works just as well as Fire TV or Apple TV, even more so if you’re using an Android phone or tablet.
