Highlights USA vs. Iran: The Americans reach the round of 16

That FIFA World Cup 2022 continued on Tuesday with Group B taking center stage. The United States (1-2-0) defeated Iran (1-0-2) 1-0 at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha. The USA will play the Netherlands in the Round of 16; Iran was eliminated with the result.

If there was any doubt that the United States would be aggressive in Monday night’s game, Christian Pulisic sent a message with his first action on the ball.

Yunus Musah, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Tuesday, was trying to score a worldie for USA

10′ – Pulisic tests the goalkeeper

The young American got his head on the ball but Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand had no trouble controlling it.

19′ – Ream is under control

With Iran pressing, Tim Ream stepped forward and got the ball out of a dangerous position.

27′ – Weah seizes the opportunity

Tim Weah had a great look in front of goal but didn’t wait for it to calm down. This could very well have been the first of the Americans.

32′ – Weah again!

The goalscorer from the Americans’ group stage opener is pushing for his second tournament win.

38′ – Pulisic shakes it off

Pulisic needed a minute to collect himself after colliding with Beiranvand.

45′ – Weah waves it off

Weah almost scored the second, but the touchline referee ruled his goal offside.

Halftime: USA 1, Iran 0

The United States dominated possession in the first half, winning the possession battle 61% to 39%. It also beat Iran 9-0 in the first 45 minutes.

46′ – Pulisic is making a substitution for Aaronson

Pulisic finished the first half but he couldn’t continue in the second half. Aaronson will play left wing in his place.

47′ – Sargent forces hold

Josh Sargent opened the second half for the USA with a shot on target. The US clearly has no plans to play conservative, even with the precious lead.

78′ – USA hold on

Iran put the pressure on in the second half but the US maintained their one-goal lead.

80′ – The USA go on the defensive

Gregg Berhalter replaced two defenders – Walker Zimmerman and Shaq Moore – to maintain the lead.

81′ – Iran almost equalize

Matt Turner had to get up to make that save.

90+9′ – THE USA ARE THROUGH

The United States need a win to advance to the knockout rounds of the tournament – anything else would result in elimination. Meanwhile, Iran only needs a draw and England need to beat Wales to secure their place in the next round.

Josh Sargent is back in Gregg Berhalter’s starting XI after starting on the bench against England, and Cameron Carter-Vickers gets the starting shot over Walker Zimmerman, who started at center-back in USA’s first two group stage games.

Although “I think we’re going to win” has long been the chant of US soccer fans, “It’s called Soccer” gained popularity and remained relevant in the run-up to America’s game against England.
