Google Pixel phones just got a handy airplane mode upgrade

Google continues to improve Airplane mode Android by setting it to stay connected to Wi-Fi when you turn on airplane mode. Even better, you might not even need the latest version of Android 13 to turn this feature on.

While 9to5GoogleReporting from suggests that this feature was only introduced in the Android 13 QPR1 Beta and stable updates, a pixel support Article advises that devices only need to be running Android 11 or newer.

Correction: We updated this story. iPhone lets you use Wi-Fi in Airplane mode in iOS 16. We apologize for the error.

Airplane mode has come a long way since it first appeared on smartphones. This is admittedly a surprising statement for a feature that’s essentially used in one place, but it’s true. I remember turning on Airplane mode once only to find that my Bluetooth earphones didn’t suddenly disconnect – what a huge improvement that was. But that was all the way back Android 11.
