Apple SVP of Hardware Faces Challenges in Manufacturing Future SoCs With Performance and Efficiency Benefits; The competition can catch up

Apple’s A-Series SoCs continue to lead the smartphone market with unrivaled performance, but the annual gap in those leaps has narrowed. That’s because the tech giant has experienced a massive brain drain, with engineers and executives at the company’s chipset division leaving in search of better opportunities and an improved work environment. This makes the current situation extremely difficult, according to a report for Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, Johnny Srouji.

A previous report said that a previous A16 Bionic iteration had ray tracing support but was consuming too much power and couldn’t be used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This could be why Apple’s latest top-tier iPhone SoC uses a GPU architecture similar to the A15 Bionic, although a previous die-shot comparison shows fewer differences between the two custom silicon.

The information says Apple’s Srouji will continue to face problems as more chip engineers head for greener pastures, including CPU designer Gerard Williams III, who founded Nuvia in 2019 and was acquired by Qualcomm, which later introduced Oryon. Although he was later replaced by Mike Filippo, he quit too early this year to work for Microsoft, and surprisingly, Apple has yet to name his successor.

To keep more engineers from leaving the company, Apple has made presentations to convince its employees that a career with the California-based giant is more rewarding and stable, given the immense risk involved with chip-centric startups development is connected. Given that many industry experts and economic watchers have been predicting a severe economic downturn, many of these engineers will likely prefer to work at Apple.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that companies like Qualcomm can now gain an edge over Apple’s A-series chipsets. According to a multi-core benchmark leak, the newly announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 manages to close that performance gap, and if the A17 Bionic, due out next year, disappoints in performance metrics, Qualcomm’s flagship or MediaTek will overtake Apple’s next-gen offering for the first time in 2023.
