14-year-old girl dies after a knife attack near Ulm – DW – December 5th, 2022

Police in southern Germany have confirmed that a 14-year-old girl was killed and a 13-year-old seriously injured on Monday morning after she was attacked on the open road on her way to school in the village of Illerkirchberg.

The two girls were attacked around 7:30 a.m. local time by a man who was reportedly carrying a knife.

Investigators confirmed that early indications were that they were stabbed.

“The 14-year-old had to be resuscitated at the scene before being taken to the hospital, where she died despite best efforts to save her life,” police said.

The other girl remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, they added.

Released information on suspects

Police and prosecutors said late Monday the prime suspect was a 27-year-old asylum seeker from Eritrea.

Authorities said the man, who is currently hospitalized and in police custody, fled to asylum shelters after the attack.

“When police and SWAT teams searched the premises, they came across three residents, all Eritrean asylum seekers,” authorities said in a statement.

Police said the man was at the home before the attack and was carrying a knife – believed to be the weapon used in the attack – when he was arrested.

The other two men in the shelter were taken away for questioning.

Earlier in the day, police told reporters they intend to conduct “a thorough background investigation” by evening, a spokesman said it was already “in full swing”.

No motive has been announced yet.

The police statement stressed that while such an event could incite fear and emotion, it asked authorities “not to entertain general suspicions or to support or support any such suspicion against foreigners, refugees or asylum-seekers in general”.

German federal, state and local officials denounce ‘terrible’ incident

Local police say the operation, which was carried out with the support of a SWAT team, is now over and there is no longer any danger to the public.

Mayor Markus Häussler, who was at the crime scene all morning, called the situation “terrible” in an interview with the regional association. SüdwestPress Newspaper.

Häussler said Illerkirchberg – a picturesque baroque village of 5,000 people south of Ulm on the border of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria halfway between Stuttgart and Munich – was “in a state of shock”.

“I mourn the murdered child and hope with all my heart that the injured girl will recover,” wrote Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) on Twitter in the evening. Faeser said her thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two girls.

The Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl complained that the 14-year-old had “suddenly been torn from his life”. Strobl also expressed words of support and condolences to the families and friends of the young girls.

After wishing the surviving girl a full recovery, the politician promised to find out exactly what happened and why.
